  • As seen from Tybee north beach. Each day many large ships navigate the channel known as the Tybee Roads, guided by the skilled and experienced Harbor Pilots, to gain access to the safety of the Savannah River or the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean. These massive vessels sometimes passing only yards apart as they navigate the narrow channel. The area where the Savannah River’s estuary meets the ocean is known as "Tybee Roads".
